My name is Meredith McCoy, and I am an Associate Professor of American Studies and History at Carleton College, where I currently co-direct our Indigenous Engagement in Place initiative and teach Indigenous histories and research methods.
I have previously worked as a public school teacher (6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish, English, and Social Studies), a Policy Assistant at the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education, and an instructor at Turtle Mountain College and Freedom University.
My research examines how Indigenous families, educators, and community leaders have long repurposed tools of settler violence into tools for Indigenous life. This research follows two core priorities:
- documenting how Indigenous communities have navigated settler policies, particularly relating to education and families
- creating curricular materials for K-12 educators to support their teaching of Indigenous histories and/or Indigenous studies.
